Today we’re taking a look at what’s going on in the left coast. More importantly, what’s going on in the Euro car scene in Southern California. Big SoCal Euro Gathering is such a huge gathering of European cars that it makes ripples cross-country. Many people travel from all over to attend this event.
SoCal Euro is a gathering that started with humble beginnings in a small parking lot. It’s a show that was started by the people and still remains “by the people, for the people” to this day. In 2013, SoCal Euro saw it’s biggest showing yet with a gathering of easily more than 3,000 cars. Porsches, Volkswagens, Audis, BMWs, Mercedes, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martin, and more… However, the show still remains focused on the grassroots car enthusiast. The enthusiasts come first as they are the ones that support the show. Otherwise the vendors would not even be there.
And where is such a massive gathering held? Well, such a big gathering requires a parking lot bigger than your average Costco. Enter Qualcomm Stadium, the home of the San Diego Chargers. On the Saturday of SoCal Euro every year, the even takes up roughly half of the entire Qualcomm Stadium premises.
The grassroots beginnings of the gathering are evident the minute you show up. The real show is the rows and rows of cool Europeans cars lined up all over the parking lot. There is a fenced area that holds the formal show area with the vendor tents and display cars, but you could literally spend the entire day in the parking lot and have a blast. There is just as much to see in the lot as there is in the show area.
Southern Cali’s biggest names in aftermarket parts, accessories and tuning are all there. They all bring their own taste of modded Euro cars for display. Apart from that there’s raffles (good stuff too), food and general entertainment for any car enthusiast – not just the Euro nuts.
2013’s SoCal Euro partnered with Race Legal in San Diego to host drag races during the event. Previous years had an autocross course and car control areas, but this year had all out real head to head competition. Yes, some complained that drag racing doesn’t belong in a European car event. But really, who cares? This is the good ol’ USA. Drag them Euro cars ‘til their wheels fall off!
Admittedly it was neat to see a souped up old GTI beat a new Mustang 5.0. ‘Merica fought back though. ACG Automotive’s modified Duramax diesel truck laid down the law beating a Lamborghini Gallardo. Yes, the diesel pickup beat the Lambo. Go USA!
Big SoCal Euro 2013 was a giant success. It has been like that since it’s humble beginnings and continues to grow and get better every year. The support from the locals points to continued growth and enjoyment in the years to come. If you are ever in Southern California late summer, this is a good car show to attend if you want a glimpse of the giant-size some SoCal shows can command.
