Meets & Shows

Features of local and occasionally national car meets and auto shows. A nice mix of the grass roots and professional show scenes.

Miatapalooza 2017

Back in 2013, not long after acquiring my own little red ’95 Miata, I attended and reported on a local Miatapalooza event, held in nearby Lakeland, Florida. Since then, I’ve gotten to meet event organizer Randy George and many of the other friendly Florida-based Mazda Miata enthusiasts, while repairing and tinkering with my own Miata along the way. This past Saturday, Miatapalooza returned to the Tampa Bay area, taking place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida and I was not going to miss it.

Looking back at Amelia Island’s Cars & Coffee

Last month’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance was this author’s first attendance to the event and it was big… huge in fact. Due to a combination of trying to cover it all, preparation for publishing, not to mention attending the Sebring 12 and a Miata meet all in the same month; Amelia’s Cars & Coffee event ended up on the proverbial cutting room floor… until today. After the jump, we’ll revisit Cars & Coffee with a selection of photographs of the cars which were there.  (more…)

With my Miata having been broken since the end of last September, I hadn’t made it out to a single meet since last year. With that finally sorted out thanks to Maztech, I attended a meet on Wednesday. Hosted by Tampa Bay Miatas and Spinnywhoosh Graphics, this was a “BBQ and Bayshore” meet at Kojak’s House of Ribs with a cruise down South Tampa’s Bayshore Blvd and ending on Davis Island. This was the kick-off event of 2016 for regularly scheduled meets with the bay area’s Miata enthusiasts. Despite being threatened by rain this year, the 21st annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance went off without a hitch. Fog and overcast conditions had been recurrent throughout the weekend, so the awards had to be given out earlier than planned. The Amelia is quite a large event with auctions, a Cars & Coffee (we’ll soon have photos from this to show), the Concours d’Elegance, and a host of dinners and seminars. Possibly because the event takes place on an island, classic and exotic cars were around every corner on the green and also on the streets outside the events. From the new McLaren 675LT and 570 to your left to a tiny Audi relic you’ve never seen or heard of to your right, it was all there including more Pegaso sports cars than you’re likely to see anywhere else in the world, not to mention a Phantom Corsair. Past the jump is a fresh collection of photographs from this past Sunday at the Concours.  (more…)

It’s Not Every Day That You See an Icon Driven by a Legend

Over the weekend, I attended the Amelia Island Cars & Coffee and their 21st annual Concours d’Elegance. While there on Saturday, my wife and I were waiting to be shuttled to our parking area, when a Lamborghini Miura drove by a few times. On one pass, I captured some photographs of it approaching on the straight and rounding the corner. Later that night, looking through the raw files, the driver’s head and face, for some reason, looked very familiar… When I zoomed the image up to full size, I recognized him immediately; the retired legendary Lamborghini chief test driver, Valentino Balboni. Can someone help me get my jaw up off the floor?  (more…)

Many of you can probably remember when Volkswagen was known more for making small, cheap, ubiquitous cars with character, known as the Beetle, than they were for a diesel emissions controversy. Last Saturday, I was able to travel back to those good old days at the Florida Bug Jam, a family-friendly judged classic Volkswagen car show with a poker run and some dirt track hooning. I don’t think I spotted a single water-cooled VW while I was there, besides the one that I arrived in. (more…)

Taking a Look Back: First Show of the Year

Despite how eventful this year has been, some of the photos I’ve taken have not progressed to being sorted and edited until very recently. One of these events, which I attended back in January, was a local car show called the 2015 Series Open Car & Truck Show at “The Shops at Wiregrass,” a small outdoor mall in the tiny nearby town of Wesley Chapel, Florida. Despite this being the first I’d heard of this car show series, there was a pretty nice showing of cars with a good variety, which I’ve collected to share with you after the jump. (more…)
